POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE / RESEARCH FELLOW IN NONLINEAR QUANTUM PHOTONICS
CUDOS – THE CENTRE FOR ULTRAHIGH BANDWIDTH DEVICES FOR OPTICAL SYSTEMS
SCHOOL OF PHYSICS
REFERENCE NO. 1162/0514

The Centre for Ultrahigh bandwidth Devices for Optical Systems (CUDOS) group at the University of Sydney currently has a postdoctoral vacancy (Level A or B) in experimental quantum photonics, working in the Quantum Integrated Photonics (QIP) Flagship Project. This is one of six flagship projects in this Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence. The QIP project aims to develop integrated optical devices to enable significant advances in quantum-enhanced communication, processing and sensing.

The group has an outstanding track record in working towards on-demand single photon sources, with pioneering work on photonic crystal waveguides for photon pair generation and the first demonstrations of integrated spatial multiplexing of photon sources. Projects also focus on single photon frequency conversion, multiple-mode manipulation of quantum information, quantum security and random numbers, distribution of photonic quantum information, solid state photon generation in novel media and a new research direction in cryogenic quantum photonics making use of the recently awarded funding to establish a National Facility for Cryogenic Photonics. The QIP project will also benefit from the new Australian Institute for Nanoscience, which will contain clean room space, nanofabrication facilities and photonics laboratories to ensure the University of Sydney, and CUDOS, stay at the forefront of global trends in nanoscience.

This is an opportunity to join CUDOS, a centre that has long standing collaborations with world-leading researchers and is a world leader in photonics, making this an exciting, dynamic place to work and an excellent forum to achieve the fruitful multidisciplinary cross-fertilisation of ideas.

You will be expected to develop an experimental research program addressing a number of the above areas as well as possible new directions. You will play a significant role in the supervision of graduate and undergraduate research students, and contribute to the strategic planning of the QIP program, and the development of several international collaborations in this area. You will report to the Centre Director, Professor Benjamin Eggleton, and work closely with a number of other senior Centre researchers, both experimentalists and theorists, at both the University of Sydney and partner institutions.

To be successful in this position you will have:
• a PhD in Physics, EE or a related discipline
• excellent written and oral English communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment
• extensive experience with quantum optics techniques, lasers, single and multi-photon experiments; understanding of quantum information science experiments
• knowledge and understanding of the theory and formalism of quantum optics and quantum information science, and of nonlinear optics
• demonstrated ability to conduct research/scholarly activities under limited supervision either independently or as a member of a team
• evidence of substantial independent and self-directed research, and experience in the supervision of research students (Level B).

Desirable will be experience in some of the following:
• solid state system and cryogenics experience
• single photon detector design and fabrication
• guided and nonlinear optics, integrated optics and photonics
• quantum communication systems
• designing and operating electrical control and measurement systems.

The position is full-time fixed term for two years subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees. Membership of a University approved superannuation scheme is a condition of employment for new appointees.

Remuneration package: up to $107K p.a. including base salary range Level A to Level B, leave loading and up to 17% superannuation. Visa sponsorship and some assistance towards travelling cost may be available if required. Level of appointment will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

All applications must be submitted via the University of Sydney careers website. Visit sydney.edu.au/recruitment and search by the reference number for more information and to apply.
