The quest to create complex synthetic quantum systems from the bottom up is currently one of the most active and exciting areas of physics. It promises the ability to study new and advanced quantum mechanical effects for fundamental science and applications in quantum engineering. Typical experimental systems in this area are cold atoms and ions, nano-resonators, semiconductor quantum dots or superconducting quantum interference devices, with new and exciting ones added regularly. All of these allow large experimental control and detailed theoretical understanding.

The discussions at and around the next summit of the European Union heads of states and governments, which is scheduled for 22 and 23 November, will be decisive in determining the EU research budget for the next seven years. Several Member States are demanding severe cuts on the total EU budget and research will have to compete with other policy priorities.

Applications are invited for a one-year (renewable) postdoctoral position to work on topics of quantum effects in mesoscopic physics starting from 1 February 2013. The fellow will work within the Quantum Information team at Universidade Federal do ABC, São Paulo (Brazil) (http://flsemiao.wordpress.com/) under the supervision of Prof. F. L. Semiao and in very close collaboration with the Quantum Technology group at Queen's University Belfast (led by Dr. Mauro Paternostro and Dr.

We offer two PhD/Post-Doc positions, available immediately, at the newly created Center for Optical Quantum Technologies (ZOQ). In a vibrant, communicative environment, we study a wide range of quantum phenomena, from technological aspects of ultra-cold atom systems to fundamental questions of many-body theory. We use both analytical approaches, e.g. field-theoretic descriptions, as well as numerical methods, such as simulations.

Doctoral Fellowships in the
"Vienna Doctoral Program on Complex Quantum Systems"
The “Vienna Doctoral Program on Complex Quantum Systems (CoQuS)" is a graduate program funded by the FWF, and jointly hosted and supported by the University of Vienna and the Vienna University of Technology, Austria.

The CoQuS Program announces new openings for highly qualified doctoral/graduate students in experimental and theoretical quantum physics, with a strong emphasis on
• Fundamental tests of physics
• Quantum information concepts and implementations
• Matter wave interferometry: foundatio

The positions are within a CQT research project led by Dimitris G. Angelakis. We are looking for highly motivated candidates who have a strong research background mainly in theoretical quantum optics. Exceptional candidates from condensed matter theory and/or quantum information theory will also be considered.

Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD research fellowship in theoretical physics in the Quantum Light and Matter Group, at the University of Southampton.

The position starts November 2012 and it will deal with investigations of light-matter interaction in confined geometries. Three thematics that will be susceptible to be object of investigation will be:

THz lasing from symmetry breaking: arXiv:1204.4053
Ultrastrong light-matter coupling: arXiv:1209.5273, arXiv:1111.2486
Quantum optomechanics: arXiv:1011.6295
