The Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology (VCQ) is a joint collaboration
initiative, which currently involves about 25 research groups based at four leading
research institutions in and around Vienna. The aim of the VCQ is to advance
modern quantum science and technology based on a broad and multidisciplinary
research agenda. The topics addressed within VCQ range from the foundations of
quantum mechanics to complex quantum optical and many-body effects and their
application for emerging quantum technologies.

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering invites applications for a tenure-track position in the broad field of Quantum Information Systems and Applications at the Assistant Professor level starting September 2023. Candidates must have earned a PhD in ECE or related field at the time of appointment. They must possess excellent experimental skills and a deep theoretical background of fundamental challenges in quantum computing and information processing.

We offer an 18-months post-doctoral position for a motivated researcher to join our work on the application of machine learning to quantum sensing and imaging. This research is funded by the UK Quantum Enhanced Imaging hub. The researcher is expected to design and benchmark algorithms to optimise quantum sensing and imaging with single electron spins, for application to magnetic field imaging and nanoscale magnetic resonance. While the position is theoretical/numerical in nature, we expect the candidate to work proficiently with experimentalists to implement the proposed algorithms.

EXPERIMENTAL PHD POSITION: Rydberg atomtronics

An experimental Phd position (3 years) on the control of quantum correlations and phase coherence in systems of cold Rydberg atoms is available. The position is part of the research grant ‘Rydberg atomtronics’, recently funded by the Julian Schwinger Foundation and coordinated by Luigi Amico and Oliver Morsch. The project will be investigating Rydberg atoms as a platform to develop atomtronic circuits with specific operating conditions and performances both to explore basic science and applications to quantum technology.

Your Job:

You will work in an interdisciplinary project team on quantum enhanced machine learning methods. This includes:
the extension, development and analysis of new quantum machine learning algorithms for current and near-future quantum computers
investigating the applicability of quantum machine learning techniques to real-world problems from application partners
implementation and testing of algorithmic concepts with real data using QML software libraries such as Pennylane
evaluating recent technological and algorithmic developments for current quantum computers and those available in the near future
leading contributions to technical reports, scientific articles and policy papers
the co-supervision of theses

Your Profile:

PhD in physics, computer science, mathematics or comparable fields
Research experience in the area of quantum algorithms (ideally quantum machine learning)
Proven organizational and communication skills
Ability to work independently in interdisciplinary teams
Good written and spoken English language skills
Ideally good German language skills, both written and spoken
Ideally experience in software development

This project, in collaboration with IBM Research, will develop algorithms for efficient quantum simulation for plasma and fusion physics problems, and establishing their reliability in real-world quantum computers.

The project is ideal for a student interested in a close interplay of quantum computation and simulation with plasma physics.
