A postdoctoral research position to undertake theoretical research on “Quantum Thermodynamics” for 30 months from 01/05/2020 to 31/10/2022 is open for applications until 03/01/2020. This post will be funded by an EPSRC grant entitled “Quantum Many-Body Engines” awarded to Dr. Gabriele De Chiara. The project will be conducted in collaboration with experimental groups working on ultracold atomic setups with the aim of designing and realising experimentally quantum thermodynamic machines.

In this role you will help Xanadu's research staff make effective use of high-performance computing (HPC) to simulate quantum computing devices. You will help translate high-level single-thread code to multi-thread and massively parallelized low-level routines run on an HPC cluster / supercomputer / cloud environments. You will also be responsible for helping develop and optimize new parallelization techniques for simulating large quantum systems and algorithms designed for Xanadu's quantum computing platform and participate in the design and development of fast decoders for fault-tolerant quantum computers.

Qualifications:

• 5+ years of experience working in related fields.
• PhD in Computer Science, Theoretical or Mathematical Physics or Mathematics with relevant postdoctoral experience preferred, or equivalent combination of
education and experience.
• Proven track record in research of parallelization techniques (e.g., publications, software, patents).

Applicants with a PhD degree in condensed matter or atomic, molecular, and optical physics are invited to apply for a postdoctoral research position in the group of Prof. Mohammad Maghrebi in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Michigan State University. This PhD project is aimed at developing highly sensitive methods for detection of magnetic fields with optically pumped magnetometers. The magnetometer will be based on laser-interrogation of room-temperature cesium atomic vapor. Quantum techniques such as spin-squeezing can be used for improving the magnetic field sensitivity. The project may include work on designing a prototype magnetometer. Possible applications of this magnetometer include measuring bio-magnetic signals from the heart or brain. Such measurements can be done in the magnetically shielded room at Uni. of Nottingham.

The University of Sydney invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to participate in a research programme investigating quantum simulation using the trapped-ion architecture, especially for the simulation of chemical processes. The successful candidate will develop new theoretical techniques for quantum simulation of a range of chemical and physical processes and collaborate with experimentalists to enable the experimental demonstration of new methods.

PhD scholarship in Nanolaser Physics

We seek a highly talented candidate to do a PhD project on theoretical nanolaser physics within a recently started ERC Advanced Grant. The overall goal of the project is to explore, both experimentally and theoretically, a new class of nanophotonic devices based on Fano resonances, which promise to drastically reduce the quantum noise of nanolasers, while simultaneously increasing the modulation speed and offering unique control of the laser output. These properties are crucial for applications in future integrated photonic circuits.
