In partnership with the University of Adelaide, the University of New South Wales, 50+ Industry Partners and supported by the Australian Government, the $240 million dollar Defence Trailblazer for Concept to Sovereign Capability will skill the workforce of the future, support defence-focussed innovation, and play a leading role in accelerating the delivery of sovereign capabilities for the nation’s security and prosperity...at-speed and at-scale.

This project is a collaboration between the University of New South Wales Sydney led by Professor Robert Malaney, and Northrop Grumman Australia.(NGA). Experimental deployment of quantum communication over free space will open a pathway to the secure global quantum internet. We are currently developing a new prototype quantum communication system that will eventually be used to communicate with low earth orbit satellites.

You will be involved in the ongoing development of optical systems that encode entangled photon pairs, development of transmitters for quantum signalling through free space, and in the development of quantum-decoding receivers, working with stakeholders, including Researchers from NGA, and assist in the supervision of PhD students.

Who You Are:

You have a PhD degree in experimental quantum optics, and can demonstrate the following Skills and Experience:

Research capability in experimental quantum physics, as evidenced by PhD thesis, journal publications, conference proceedings, or internal reports.
Experience in experimental deployment of quantum information protocols.
Ability to conduct independent research with limited supervision.
Ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.
Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to communicate and interact with a diverse range of stakeholders and students.
An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
Knowledge of equal opportunity principles in a diverse, multi-cultural environment.
Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training

Desirable Criteria

Knowledge of quantum key distribution protocols
Knowledge of quantum photon sources and detectors
Knowledge of pulsed laser systems
