Postdoctoral Position in Theoretical Quantum Computing and Quantum Machine Learning at Los Alamos National Laboratory

Job type:

Application deadline:

Friday, May 11, 2018

Position Description: The Condensed Matter and Complex Systems Group in the Theoretical Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has a postdoctoral position opening in the area of quantum computing and quantum machine learning. This position provides an opportunity to develop novel quantum algorithms (including noise-resilient algorithms) and generally answer the fundamental question: what are quantum computers good for? The postdoctoral project will also explore the emerging field of quantum machine learning. This includes developing machine-learning techniques for evolving quantum algorithms (e.g., see https://arxiv.org/abs/1803.04114), as well as investigating the computing power of quantum neurons and quantum neural networks.

Qualifications: Theoretical expertise in quantum computing is required, and some familiarity with machine-learning concepts is desired. We welcome candidates with a variety of technical backgrounds. The prospective candidate must have completed a PhD program (within the last 5 years) in theoretical work related to quantum computing, quantum information, quantum physics, machine learning, or computer science. The ability to work creatively and independently, as a part of a diverse team, is important. Strong communication and language skills, as evidenced by publications and cover letter, are required.

Notes to applicants: Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Please apply for this position online at LANL's website, and also send a curriculum vitae (including a publication list, research interests, and the names of three references) to:

The position has an initial appointment of two years. Candidates may be considered for a Director's Fellowship and outstanding candidates may be considered for the prestigious Darleane Christian Hoffman, Richard P. Feynman, or J. Robert Oppenheimer Fellowships. For general information refer to the Postdoctoral Program webpage:

Pre-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a pre-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Equal Opportunity: Los Alamos National Laboratory is an equal opportunity employer and supports a diverse and inclusive workforce. We welcome and encourage applications from the broadest possible range of qualified candidates. The Laboratory is also committed to making our workplace accessible to individuals with disabilities and will provide reasonable accommodations, upon request, for individuals to participate in the application and hiring process.
