Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Warm Vapour Quantum Optical Memories
Department of Physics, Parks Road, Oxford
Grade 7: £31,604 - £38,833 p.a.
Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Warm Vapour Quantum Optical Memories in the Ultrafast Quantum Optics Group (UFQO) led by Professor Ian Walmsley.

The post is available initially for a fixed-term duration of 12 months.

This project will experimentally demonstrate temporal multiplexing of a heralded single photon source using an atomic based quantum optical memory. This will build on the successfully demonstrated noise-free memory protocol – off-resonant cascaded absorption (ORCA). This project will also seek to develop the quantum memory as a rack-mountable module.

The successful candidate will be responsible for defining, developing and executing research directed toward the attainment of quantum optical memories with the required performance for scalable quantum optical technologies. There will be a focus on the optimisation of the memory efficiency, as well as the heralding efficiency and purity of the heralded single photon source – with the goal to deliver high brightness and highly indistinguishable single photons. There will be involvement in key decisions on research directions, methodologies and research responsibilities. The postholder will also co-supervise graduate students, participate in meetings, including travelling for national and international collaboration, and contribute to report-writing.

Applicants should possess, or be close to completion of a PhD in physics or a related field and ideally a strong background in quantum optics and atomic physics. Previous experience in the field of experimental quantum optical memories will be an advantage. Candidates are expected to demonstrate a record of research experience and the ability to contribute to the outlined research programme and whilst working in a team and independently.

The post-holder will have the opportunity to teach.

Please direct enquiries about the role to Dr Patrick M Ledingham (patrick.ledingham@physics.ox.ac.uk).

You will be required to upload a statement of research interests, CV and details of two referees as part of your online application.

Only applications received before 12.00 midday on Monday 8 October 2018 can be considered.
