1: Job title
Project Researcher or Project Assistant Professor.
Several positions are available.
2: Contract period
From as soon as possible after June 1, 2026, through March 31, 2027.
(See below for renewal and the maximum possible period of employment.)
3: Renewal of contract
The contract is renewable on a fiscal year basis (from April 1 to March 31). Renewals will be made up to a maximum of 4. The total period of employment is until March 31, 2031, at the longest.
Renewal will be determined by considering the progress of the assigned work, job performance, work record, attitude, health conditions, budget status, and the amount of work at the end of the term.

7: Role
Our group conducts theoretical research across a broad range of fields in quantum information and quantum computation, including quantum algorithms, quantum error correction, and quantum resources.

Successful candidates are expected to contribute to at least one of the above areas through the following activities:
- Conduct independent research on the group's projects.
- Work closely with other group members and contribute to collaborative research within the group.
- In addition to the above, collaborate with international and domestic researchers, and provide positive feedback to the group.
- Lead and contribute to the preparation of manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings.
- Present research results at international conferences, workshops, and seminars.
- Supervise and mentor students and junior researchers in the group, and contribute to activities related to developing the next generation of researchers as appropriate (by default, there are no course-teaching or teaching-assistant duties).
- Carry out the activities necessary for the group's operation.
Scope of changes: Reassignment, dual appointment, and secondment may be ordered.
8: Working Hours
A discretionary work system for professional work applies, and working hours will be deemed as 7 hours and 45 minutes per day.
9: Days off
Saturdays, Sundays, Holidays, and the year-end and New Year holidays (December 29 to January 3)

Annual Paid Leave, Special Leave, etc.
11: Salary
- The position is covered by the annual salary system under the University of Tokyo Regulations, and the monthly salary is within the range of JPY 400,000 to 1,000,000, including performance and achievement allowances. The salary will be determined based on your qualifications, capacity, and experience. Note that the salary range is highly competitive by Japanese postdoctoral standards (https://www.jsps.go.jp/english/e-fellow/e-ippan/index.html) and is intended to support a comfortable standard of living in Japan. For a rough comparison across countries, dividing salaries by a price index, such as the price of a Big Mac (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Mac_Index), can be a useful normalization; in Japan, a Big Mac currently costs about JPY 480.
- A commuting allowance of up to JPY 55,000 is provided.
- No retirement benefits and bonuses.
- Salary will be paid, in principle, on the 17th of each month.
12: Insurance
Eligible for the insurance from the Mutual Aid Association of MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) and Employment Insurance.
13: Accident Compensation
Work-related accidents and commuting accidents are covered by the Industrial Accident
Compensation Insurance Act and the University of Tokyo's Teacher and Staff Act
Non-Compliance Accident Compensation Regulations.
14: Qualification requirements and desired experiences
Requirements
- Hold a PhD (or be expected to acquire one by the time of arrival) in computer science, physics, mathematics, engineering, or a closely related discipline relevant to quantum information and quantum computation.
- Demonstrated experience in theoretical research in at least one of the following areas: quantum algorithms; complexity theory; quantum machine learning; fault-tolerant quantum computation; quantum error correction; quantum information theory; quantum cryptography; entanglement; quantum resource theory; mathematics related to quantum information; or closely related fields, with a publication record commensurate with career stage.
- Proficient in written and spoken English (Japanese proficiency is not mandatory).
- Ability to work on both rigorous theoretical analysis and numerical simulations, as needed.
- Ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary team, broaden expertise, and adapt to a rapidly evolving research environment.
Desired experiences
- Track record of peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals and top-tier conference proceedings.
- Proficiency in scientific programming.
- Experience in interdisciplinary collaborative research.
- Experience in student supervision and educational activities.
