Applications are invited for PhD positions in experimental atomic physics at the Centre for Quantum Technologies (CQT), Singapore. Three positions are available within the research group of Murray Barrett, located at CQT on the campus of the National University of Singapore. Research is focused on the development of an optical atomic clock with singly ionized lutetium.

Starting in October 2020, we are seeking a PhD student each on two projects

1. Quantum sensing of multiple parameters

2. Quantifying accuracy and confidence in NISQ simulators

This PhD project is aimed at developing highly sensitive methods for detection of magnetic fields with optically pumped magnetometers. The magnetometer will be based on laser-interrogation of room-temperature cesium atomic vapor. Quantum techniques such as spin-squeezing can be used for improving the magnetic field sensitivity. The project may include work on designing a prototype magnetometer. Possible applications of this magnetometer include measuring bio-magnetic signals from the heart or brain. Such measurements can be done in the magnetically shielded room at Uni. of Nottingham.

PhD scholarship in Nanolaser Physics

We seek a highly talented candidate to do a PhD project on theoretical nanolaser physics within a recently started ERC Advanced Grant. The overall goal of the project is to explore, both experimentally and theoretically, a new class of nanophotonic devices based on Fano resonances, which promise to drastically reduce the quantum noise of nanolasers, while simultaneously increasing the modulation speed and offering unique control of the laser output. These properties are crucial for applications in future integrated photonic circuits.

We are looking for excellent and highly motivated students or graduates of Physics, Maths, Enginnering or CS schools, with strong analytical skills, and passion in learning to to join our team.

A staff or graduate student (Ph.D.) position is available at UCLA to design a chip scale spin photon memory interface with long coherence times (full descr. below). Degree (B.Sc. or M.Sc.) in physics or related field, and a strong background in experimental physics or engineering is required. Experience in magnetic resonance-style experiments is an asset but not required. The main tasks will initially involve implementing low field pulsed microwave-optical quantum control schemes of optical-nuclear transitions of deep donors in Si and their recoupling via cavity QED.

Context: The PhD project is part of the ITN “QUDOT-TECH” (www.qudot-tech.eu), that aims to construct a platform for fully integrated on-chip quantum information (QI) processing including Quantum Dots (QD)-based single-photon sources, waveguides, nonlinearities and detectors implemented on a planar chip. QUDOT-TECH gathers leading European academic and industrial partners to show that in a combined effort the current technological bottlenecks can be overcome, paving the way for quantum enabling technology for research and industry.
