Job Description
A 24-month postdoctoral position is available at the Laboratoire Ondes et Matière d’Aquitaine (LOMA) in Bordeaux, France, as part of the EU Horizon Europe PATHFINDEROPEN project MECH-QUBIT(MECHanical QUBIT With Enhanced Coherence). The successful candidate will work on the theoretical development of mechanical qubits based on the coupling between mechanical modes of suspended bilayer graphene and quantum dots.
Bilayer graphene offers a unique platform for engineering quantum dots with high precision while preserving the exceptional mechanical properties of graphene. Recent studies have revealed a rich internal physics, including valley and spin degrees of freedom, with qubit coherence times reaching up to 30 seconds. However, their controlled manipulation remains an open challenge. The project aims to theoretically explore how mechanical oscillator deformation can be exploited to create and manipulate a new class of mechanical qubits, in close collaboration with experimental groups at ICFO (Spain, Adrian Bachtold) and RWTH Aachen (Germany, Christoph Stampfer).
Requirements
• A PhD in Theoretical Physics (or expected completion by the start date), with a strong background in at least one of the following:
o Quantum mechanical systems
o Condensed matter physics
o Quantum optics
• Experience in theoretical modeling of quantum systems is highly desirable.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
Working Environment
The postdoctoral researcher will join the Condensed Matter Theory team at LOMA, a dynamic and collaborative environment with a strong focus on quantum technologies. The position offers the opportunity to interact with leading experimental groups in Europe and contribute to a cutting-edge research project at the interface of quantum mechanics, nanomechanics, and condensed matter physics.
Practical Information
• Duration: 24 months (flexible start date, up to December 2026).
• Salary: Competitive, commensurate with experience (French CNRS standards).
• Location: Bordeaux, France.
• Eligibility: This position is subject to French PPST regulations. candidates must obtain authorization from the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research (MESR) prior to appointment.
