ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR/SENIOR LECTURER (PHYSICS)
SCHOOL OF CHEMISTRY AND PHYSICS WESTVILLE CAMPUS
REF NO.:CP11/2018

The School offers a vibrant educational and research environment in Chemistry and Physics. The South African Research Chair in Quantum Information Processing and Communication hosted by the University of KwaZulu-Natal, funded by the DST and administered by the NRF resides in the School. Currently, the research of the Chair is focused around open quantum systems, quantum information processing, cold atoms, and quantum optics.

UNSW Canberra has an opportunity for a Research Associate - Theoretical Quantum Optics. You will become a member of the Advanced Electromagnetics Group undertaking research in the field of Theoretical Quantum Optics working on projects funded by external sponsors in the area of quantum optomechanical and electromechanical systems.

A postdoctoral position is available at the University of Ottawa aimed at developing nanowire quantum dot non-classical light sources at telecom wavelengths for implementation in quantum networks. Candidates are expected to hold a Ph.D. degree in physics and a strong background in quantum optics and photonics of semiconductor-based nanostructures. Knowledge of quantum optical spectroscopy techniques, measurements at cryogenic temperatures and frequency translation techniques based on non-linear processes in on-chip waveguide structures are considered an asset.

In recent years, a fast development of different quantum hardware, theoretical models and numerical tools has been achieved, which pave the way to unprecedented investigations in quantum science, and in particular in the study of out of equilibrium many-body processes. However, the new challenges call for different expertise that has to be merged: from the theoretical and experimental or numerical knowledge to the theoretical understanding of the system to be simulated.

During the last years, a synergy among different fields in physics has grown up to understand and characterize, to control and manipulate quantum many-body systems that appear in high-energy physics and condensed matter models. Thanks to this collaborative effort, new tools and concepts from quantum information and quantum optics complement more traditional ones from particle and statistical physics.
